Zeolite Soil Amendment

Zeolite is a natural mineral with excellent cation trapping and removing capabilities.

· Overview:

Zeolite, with its natural sponge-like structure, soaks up the water in the soil. The porous seize, like mineral molecules, absorb moisture and is collected in it. This creates aeration space in the roots. The mineral granules are negatively charged and have a neutral pH; it contains water for more extended periods and maintains the pH of the soil to prevent rot in the roots.

Zeolite is helpful in agriculture and farming as it slowly releases fertilizers and aerates the soil. It absorbs micro and macronutrients in its pores. It maintains the pH of the soil as well.

Zeolite soil amendment is useful because the mineral naturally soaks up the nutrients in the fertilizers and prevents them from wasting away with the irrigation water as well as slowly releases them for the plant roots to take them up.

Zeolite has a natural porous structure that helps in taking up oxygen from the soil into the pores and provides a channel for flowing oxygen into the plant. Oxygen saturation in the soil is increased and prevents bacterial growth and roots from rotting.

Reduction in Fertilizer requirements:

Zeolite soil amendment is better because mineral naturally takes up the nitrogenous wastes from the fertilizers and improves fertilizer quality and prevents water pollution caused by nitrogenous wastes. Seventy percent of the nitrogen in fertilizer is wasted in irrigation water and the environment. Zeolite prevents nitrogen wastage.

Fertilizer usage can be reduced when Zeolite is appropriately used in the growing fields. The mineral naturally absorbs the fertilizer as well as the water in it to be released when the plant needs it. This reduces the amount of fertilizer and water required for plant growth. Clinoptilolite use in soil produces better quality crops, more yield, and less cost on growing plants.

Zeolite keeps the nutrients in the fertilizer in the growth zone of the plants. It prevents them from wasting water or reach water reserves. The nutrients and nitrogen in the fertilizer are absorbed by the mineral and are stopped from wasting away. This reduces the fertilizer requirements as well as water costs. When manure is treated with natural zeolite, it becomes a natural fertilizer.

· Additive and Soil Amendment:

Zeolite soil amendment is better than regular soil amendment because zeolite mixed in fertilizer makes the fertilizers better, and they are ”intelligent fertilizers.” Intelligence refers to the ability of zeolite-based fertilizers to release and store nutrients according to the plant's needs. The nutrients are not water-soluble but are available for the plant to take up through the soil. This increases nutrient and oxygen availability and, in return, increases plant production and health.

Lime and other additives are prone to break down, but zeolite is resistant to that. Zeolite remains in the soil for an extended period and improves the soil quality. It retains nutrients in the soil. , both normal and sandy, maintains the pH and acidity of the ruined lands. It is useful in the agrochemical industry, such as insecticides and pesticides and fertilizers, as it slowly releases them in the soil, preventing wasting.

The minerals natural high surface area and pores in the structure make it possible for the soil to maintain deep root aeration with less effort.

Zeolite helps in the reduction of costs required for soil maintenance. With its absorption and adsorption properties, zeolite retains nutrients in the root zone. It aerates and maintains moisture in the soil; pH levels are also balanced that reduces lime cost. Zeolite helps both environmentally and economically.

Rehavoka tested zeolites effect on grass and plant production, grass fields treated with Zeolite had increased biomass up to 50 percent. The areas also showed decreased production of weeds. Researchers also used zeolite in pine and beech production. The results showed that the trunk width was better than the normal grown ones and had more ability to withstand replanting and was grown at a faster rate than fertilizer without zeolite.

In another research, they found that zeolite removed all the heavy metals and toxins in the soil by the ion-exchange mechanism.

· Reduction in Fertilizer Use:

The United States, on average, utilizes billions of dollars worth of lawn and garden accessories. Zeolite helps in reducing the cost by storing and absorbing the fertilizer in its granules by ion-exchange and slowly releasing them according to the plants and grass need. It also helps in minimizing the wastage of fertilizers by leaking into the water that is also harmful to the environment as it causes excessive algae production and pollution.

Clinoptilolite helps in the longterm improvement of garden growth and plants by increasing the available nitrogen and oxygen to the plant. The natural honeycomb-like structure of the mineral contains a meshwork of silica and aluminum atoms that are attached to oxygen. The nutrients in the fertilizer are taken up by these molecules and are released according to the needs of the plant roots; this increases the water availability to the plants as well up to or more than 30 percent.

Lime and other additives a likely to be broken up with time in the soil. Zeolite doesn’t breakdown and absorbs nutrients in it for more extended periods increasing nutrient availability. It also increases the moisture and water availability helping in cost reductions. Due to its natural pH and buffering capacities, the lime requirements are also decreased.

Macolini and Zanon experimented with the effects of Zeolite on Turf-grass. They treated 18 fields that were sandy and were amended by 20 percent peat. A zeolite containing fertilizer was added on some fields, and some areas included fertilizers that had the same nutritional content but not zeolite.

The researcher noted the grass growth index and coloration, the nutrients leeching in the ground depth was also noted, and the results showed that the Zeolite added fertilizer fields gave better-looking grass and had more growth, as well as the nutrition seeping, was better. Potassium and nitrogen levels in the ground were also better.

Ferguson studied Clinoptilolite affects also. He found that it is capable of removing ammonium ions from the soil too. He used zeolite on turfgrass in different quantities and found out that the growth and production we’re increased by using 5-10 percent of zeolite in fields. Zeolite Sand amendment also helps in improving nitrogen use and uptake by plants increasing their yield.

· Turfgrass:

Golf courses and many other fields are made up of turfgrass, as it is used extensively. It requires a lot of water to make it remain green and healthy; many apparatuses and systems limit and control water usage, but this requires managers and controllers for their use.

Soil amendment is also used for water retention and water usage limitations. Still, the main issue with the use of additives is that they leech into the underground water reserves and the loss of ammonium and potassium and other ions that are required for nutrition.

Macolini and Zanon studied the effects of zeolite by comparing 18 fields that were sandy and were amended by peat. Some areas were treated with zeolite fertilizers and others with none zeolite fertilizers. The fields with zeolite additive showed better and greener grass than the other ones, and the leaching of ions was also reduced.

Ferguson found out that zeolite removes the ammonium ions and increases the nitrogen uptake and usage by plants.

· Gardening:

Nitrogen is a principal constituent of plants, and its leaves contain chlorophyll that is necessary for photosynthesis, and the plant food production process is made up of nitrogen. Nitrogen is not abundant in the soil, and fertilizers are used to overcome their needs. However, the use of nitrogen in fertilizers pollute the environment by leaching into the water reserves and as nitrogen gas.

Zeolite soil amendment is helpful in this as it causes the retention of nitrogen in the granules and prevents wastage of nutrients in the water and causing pollution.

The mineral naturally traps the nutrients in the honeycomb structure and slowly releases them when the plant needs them. The plants grown in soil treated with zeolite fertilizers in gardens get the benefits of rich nutrients throughout the growth period. Zeolite soaks up the fertilizer and evens out the availability of nutrients. It is non-toxic as well.

The moisture retention and water availability are also enhanced the mineral is resistant to hydrating and dehydrating conditions and maintains an even moisture conditions in the soil for plants.

Rehavkova studied that usage of zeolite in the soil enhanced the grass biomass up to 50 percent than the average. Fruit harvest was also increased in yield as well as fruit size when the zeolite is used with fertilizers in the soil. Strawberries, carrots, and onions all showed increased production.

· Cannabis:

The United States grows a large about of Cannabis. Researchers both in States and Canada have found out that the Zeolite soil amendment naturally causes better growth of Cannabis.

Zeolite absorbs the nutrients, water, and oxygen within its granules that are taken up by the plant when they need it.

Millions of pores within the minerals structure take-up nutrients, potassium, nitrates, and potash in them, making them available in the topsoil as well as root level and preventing leaching as well.

Other soil amendment agents don’t last long and break down. However, zeolite doesn’t break down and retain nutrients for a more extended time. It helps treat light and sandy soil and maintaining the pH of acidic grounds. Mineral naturally prevents soil compression and increased aeration of the roots. Zeolite doesn’t swell up when absorbing waters and doesn’t turn into mud or sludge.

Absorption and adsorption qualities maintain the moisture in the soil. It is better both for the environment and Economics as it reduces fertilizer and water requirements by retaining moisture in the ground. The neutral pH of the mineral helps by working together with the fertilizer and maintaining soil pH that, in return, helps by reducing lime requirements and costs.

Zeolite is nontoxic and nonhazardous for both plants and animals. It is the most natural, non-processed, and economically, environmentally friendly mineral available for use in agriculture and horticulture.
